Melitopol has always been and remains one of the best sport cities in Zaporizhzhia region and in Ukraine where more than 30 kinds of sport are cultivated and developed.

All kinds of physical culture and sport in the city are systematically occupied with 22,9 thousand of people - residents of different ages, occupation and social classes. There are 7.5 thousand of people in the sport sections of the city. About 15.4 thousand people visit sections of sport orientation.
Every year the city holds more than 100 sporting events, including open invitation athletes from other cities, countries.

In particular, there is the International Handball Tournament among boys in memory of Leonid Bobrov. In 2014, the tournament was attended by 28 teams from five countries.

In the International wrestling tournament "Cup of Melitopol" fighters from around the world take part. In 2014, the tournament was attended by 180 fighters, including 50 masters of sport.Among the famous events there are traditional open youth handball tournament "Crystal Ball", an open rhythmic gymnastics tournament-memorial "Natalia" and traditional open tournament in rhythmic gymnastics "Golden Fairy" with the strongest graces in region and in all Ukraine.

The city always welcomes participants  of numerous open tournament-memorials: basketball youth tournament in honor of Ivan Zakhari, boxing tournament in honor of  Henadii Ushakov and Valentyn Khatin, chess tournament in honor of Viktor and Dmitrii Sychov, futsal competition in honor of Serhii Petyshyn.

Traditional family tournament in chess and checkers "Mom, Dad and I are sport family" gather more than a hundred residents.

City stage of national football competition among youth "Leather Ball" in four age groups gathers outdoors numerous teams of urban schools and sport clus.

Annually there are held competitions, demonstration performances of athletes at the sport facilities of the city on the occasion of all-Ukrainian and city-wide celebrations.

Athletes and teams of Melitopol always worthy support the sporty image of the city, Zaporizhzhia region and Ukraine in senior competitions.

Participation in international competition has positively affect on the accumulation of the necessary experience by Melitopol athletes, contributes to strengthening internatioal friendly sporting relations, promotion of priority sports and healthy lifestyle.
